Description
Welcome to Glasgow Balboa! Our Facebook page is the place to find out about everything Balboa in Glasgow – classes, practice sessions, socials and more.
Balboa is first thought to have been danced in the United States, around 1915 and was most popular in the 1930s and 1940s. Like lindy hop, it is a descendant of Charleston, and as such you'll find lots of lindy hoppers who also dance balboa, although balboa dancers come from other dance backgrounds too. Danced in a closer embrace than lindy hop, it is said to have been developed to take up less room on the dance floor and is often danced to faster swing and jazz music.
Come along and try it out! To help you feel more comfortable, we recommend slippy shoes with leather, suede or even hard plastic soles are best as there is a lot of pivoting and turning. Trainers or gym shoes are not ideal as they have too much grip, nor are shoes that might fall off. Followers traditionally wore shoes with a heel, but flat shoes are fine if you prefer them.
We have three classes:
- Beginners: Tue 19:00-19:50
- Social/Practice: Tue 19:50-20:10
- Improvers: 20:10-21:00
